For people who love tales of werewolves with new twists then this novel is for you! Bitten is the story of Elena, the world's only female werewolf. Not the only one because all the other women were killed off, but because a woman cannot be born a werewolf, and the bitten ones tend to die under the stress of their first change, but for some reason, Elena survives and unwillingly becomes part of the pack that created her. Not that she doesn't try to get out of it, quite often too.
To try and live as normal a life as possible she moves to Toronto to try and build the life she's always wanted. Complete with a career as a journalist and a live in boyfriend, but when the pack calls her for help, not only can she not turn them down, because no one will answer the phone to hear her say no, but she also can't seem to stay away from Clay, her old flame. Which makes for plenty of awkward moments when it's decided that he will move in with Elena and her human boyfriend to act as her protector against the mutts, werewolves who are not apart of the pack. They want Elena, badly, because as the only female werewolf, that makes her valuable and exotic.
The only thing that tends to slow the story would be the constant need for Elena to call her boyfriend back in Toronto to set his fears at ease as to why she stays away for so long, and then thinking about why she forgot to call him and then not call anyway. Bitten is wonderfully written, I wish I had the talent that Kelley Armstrong posseses to create such wonderful characters and situations. There's rarely a dull moment and Elena's background is masterfully written in to make you ache in sympathy for her past as a human orphan and then a new werewolf, and then cheer as she overcomes it all. Great story, amazing fights, and a heroine that kicks ass. I had to buy the novel Broken, the third book featuring Elena, just to satisfy my hunger for more of her. Expect a review on that one next month, or just go out and get it and see what I'm fussing about.
