Spirit Lake - Murder At The Lake
(Martha Grimes)

Publicidade
I am twelve years old, I live at Spirit Lake with my mother and I have one special characteristic: I am invisible, nobody pays any attention to me. Martha Grimes satisfies us with a work of surprising simplicity and intensity. The reader is placed inside the body of an urchin on the brink of adolescence, who spends all her time trying to solve a 40-year-old murder investigation. Emma has no friends of her own age, she is only interested in the sheriff of the village, a waitress in a bar and two old women who sometimes invite her to take cocoa with them. Emma is not beautiful, nor intelligent, and suffers from her acquaintances, whose only pleasure, it would seem, is to persecute her. Nobody really takes her seriously, especially not when she speaks about Marie-Evelyne, the girl murdered 40 years earlier. The appearance of an unknown in the village and the discovery of the body of a woman close to the place of the first murder, revives Emma?s enthusiasm for the story. To help her in her investigation, in between two jobs at the Paradis hotel where her mother spends a lot of time, she is helped by the handsome sheriff, the gossips Miss Flyte and Miss Flagger, the kind waitress Maud, the two almost mute and mentally retarded Wood brothers and the eccentric aunt Aurora. Through her disturbed life as a teenager, Emma will be bring herself to question the world of adults and her very own existence. The police investigation involves us in life?s evils and its naive questioning of life. A treat for those who do not like reading long, complicated novels, and a very pleasing author.
