Sense And Sensibility
(Jane Austen)

Publicidade
The thinking-person?s soap. Jane Austen?s novels have it all if you are a lover of fiction. Intrigue, plot, character studies ? and all washed over with a delicious smattering of caustic yet subtle wit and irony. The story opens with a literary device guaranteed to get you gripped from the start ? that of a blinding injustice to decent, innocent people: Henry Dashwood dies leaving everything he has to his first wife?s son. His second wife and her three daughters are suddenly left homeless. Making good marriages seemed to be the driving force behind 19th century middle-class life. You can imagine the 19th century reader screaming at Dashwood: ?Who will now marry your poor, penniless daughters? ?Not ones to revel in their misfortune, the unfortunate quartet soon manage to turn tragedy into opportunity as their world opens up to some delicious characters ? including some wonderfully despicable cads who play the early 19th century field breaking our heroines? hearts. However, in typical Austen fashion, these ladies ? who begin the novel as immature and naïve - don?t stay down for long and it?s a joy to see them rise above it all. The novel has the seemingly stereotypical dashing heroes who aren?t always what they seem ? but it?s Austen?s analytical skill which makes them more than cardboard cut-outs. Assumptions and misunderstandings abound to grab the reader and get them routing for the main characters, who, very different in their outlooks on life, endearingly learn a lot from their experiences. You may have seen the 1995 Ang Lee / Emma Thompson film (which, due to the nature of feature films, cuts some important scenes out); TV serialisations (which due to their nature, are able to deal more in-depth), and you may even have bought the T shirt, but if you haven?t read the book, you ain?t seen nothin? yet. Incidentally, I gather there is another TV serialisation in the pipeline. Why make so many re-makes of re-makes? Because the original novel they are all based on has so much to offer it cannot fail to appeal to a wide-ranging audience.
