ABSTRACT ? LANSDALE< J R. ? WRITER OF THE PURPLE RAGE. 1984 Carroll & Graf. A collection of the offbeat and astonishing short stories by one of the most imaginative writers in the US today. The stories vary in style from hard-hitting crime stories to Ray Bradbury style fantasy tales, to the downright weird and wonderful. The crime stories are straightforward, and graphic, but very human. Two youngsters contemplate a murder at a drive-in cinema in Drive-In Date. In The Diaper, aliens invade a baby?s nappy but get wiped out when the infant does what comes naturally without the parents even becoming aware of t what has really happened. With ?Incident On And Off A Mountain Road? a serial killer meets his match when he takes on a woman passing by with the body of her own murder victim in the trunk of her car. A real highlight is Godzilla?s Twelve Step Program in which the city stopping monster goes through an Alcoholics anonymous recovery process along with other creatures, and becomes saddened by the loss of his destructive nature until he finally rebels as a monster and proud of it. The best-known story is undoubtedly now Bubba Ho-Tep, as it has recently been filmed with Bruce Campbell in the leading role as an old man who is a/. Elvis Presley, or B/. An Elvis Impersonator who has come to think he is Elvis, and a geriatric black man who thinks he is John Fitzgerald Kennedy (JFK), who?s brain is talking to him from the Whitehouse after his head has been filled with sand. The old men are trapped in a run down uncaring nursing home, but soon become aware that an ancient Egyptian Mummy, Ho-Tep is chewing the souls of the pensioners around them. They decide to fight back, and die in the successful attempt, gaining a sense of new life and meaning in their heroic stance. In synopsis, such a story sounds preposterous, but Lansdale is a genius for making the highly unlikely tale perfectly palatable. The title of this excellent and eclectic collection is a pun on the Western Riders Of the Purple Sage, and well worth a look.
