Doppler
(Erlend Loe)
This is one of those books where you start to wonder if the author is completely insane. The main character, a guy in his thirty's, is called Doppler. He wakes up one day and realizes that he hasn't lived his life the way he feels he should. He has lived all his life as a typical middleaged man who pays bills, washes his carand keeps up a good apperance. Until this one day. Doppler tries to fight his thoughts, but has to give up. Everything is cold and lifeless - he has never lived for real! Doppler decides to hide from the hectic society for a hvile and moves to a small, uncomfortable tent in the woods. Now, this hero of ours has some hidden qualities. The very first night he shot a big moose, but unfortunately one with a baby calf. Doppler and this little elk comes to develop quite an uniqe relationship. The elk even sleeps in the tent with him. Isee this as if the author lets his charakter go through an emotional, yet very weird period because he is supposed to grow from it and learn a couple of life's lessons. The elk which came to be known as Bongo, and Doppler went on trips together in the woods and very often to ahouse nearby, which belonged to a loner of a man called Düsseldorf.Although theydidn't visit him! No, the poor little elk couldn'texactly eat his poor, late mother. And Doppler wasn't much better - he was seeminglyaddicted to milk. It became such a problem for him, that he started to swap meat from the mother elk for some milk from the local store. While these two play in the forest together can the reader start to notice a change in Doppler's mood. There's something happening. One could almost compare it with a fairytale where the hero goes through a total social change. Doppler discover something about life that he likes. Even if we observe this remarkablepositive change in Doppler's life, there's something that's bothering him. He has a family that depends on him. To kids, who have their own problems to mind, as kids usually do. And then there was the wife. She had been visiting him a couple of times since he moved out, much to her own pleasure. Doppler hated it. Not necessary because of her, but because he had a defect that bothered him. You see, Doppler was blessed with a very big limb. Very big. Too big. No wonder he was feeling down. I think he was quite fed up with his whole life and everything that surrounded him, that day when the wife decided to pop by again. This time, she was carrying extra luggage. She reveals the news quite fast, she was pregnant. Again. All Doppler can thing of is his cursed limb - which he had become way too disappointed of, way too many times. It must have been right there he realized it. Even if he tried to keep the family together for a while. This chapter of his life was over. No moro babies crying og wives demanding. This was it. And true enough, before christmas had he left. But not before he reallyconnected with his son. In just a few months, those two became best buddies.Hehad beenlooking forward to a life with Bongo asonly bedmate, butwhen his oldest sonlooked at him witheyes that was ready to burst from love and admiration, he rearranged all his plans. And onecold, isy day inDecember, they walked away from the house and the rest of the family. They walked in direction of the woods.Maybe they'd be invited to the old man Düsseldorf, where they would sit together and almost not talk at all. The understood each other just as well anyway.
