Pygmalion
(George Bernard Shaw)
What happens when a Professor of Phonetics decides to polish a ?guttersnipe?, loaded with cockney accent. The result can be nothing but uproariously funny; & that is what Pygmalion is. However, Shaw the eternal preacher doesn?t deter from punchingm a liberal dose of Shavian philosophy in the garb of humour. The audience loved it & still do , be it on stage or on screen- ?My Fair Lady? sizzled.- the play managed to set the cash registers ringing.Eliza, Henry, Col. Pickering, Alfred Doolittle have all made their individual places in the public psyche, independent of their creator. But ultimately the credit goes to playwright in making the dry subject of phonetics such an entertainment.
