Bleak House

Bleak House is one of Charles Dickens' best novels because it keeps intact Dickens' beloved storytelling style while giving the reader some insight into the political issues of Victorian England. Unlike his other novels, there is sophistication in this story that pulls the reader through the mysterysurrounding the main character, Miss Summerson and theinheritance case ofJarndyceversus Jarndyce. Each character goes through struggles that are important and connected to every other as they all are tied together in a shroud of mystery. This same shroud of mystery is the veilwhich Dickens uses to describe the political entity of the Judicial system and its clouded judgment and inefficiency.
The immediate tone of the book is fog and obscurity as Dickens starts with the Court of Chanceryand the case of Jarndyce and Jarndyce.This story starts with third person narration then will shift to Esther Summerson's narration from the time of a young girl living as theward of her Aunt through adulthood where she is mysteriously provided for and later received into the protection of John Jarndycealonghis orphaned cousins, Richard and Ada.
Along with the story of Miss Summerson there are many characters aiding to clarify the mystery that surrounds all the characters of the story. You will find yourself in search of answers from beginning to end as you follow the characters into Tom-all-Alone's, upon The Ghost's Walk, the Court of Chancery meeting character like the ambitious Mr. Guppy and his head bobbing mother, as well as philanthropic Mrs. Jellyby and her inky daughter Caddy. You will be honored by the great deportment of the elder Mr.Turveydrop as everyone else cannot help be reminded of, but most importantly you will meet with fashionable intelligencewhenever my Lady, Lady Dedlock givesyou her audience.
Therefore, Bleak House is not merely a place, but a homewhere Dickens' invites the reader to share in the mystery surrounding not only his characters, but each one of us for there is a mystery in each heart, untold pages where we each just begin to read.
