A Wedding In December
(Anita Shreve)
The attraction of most bookslie in thepossibility ofthere's a lot of adventure, excitement, special mind-numbing affects and a great deal of drama. Even the cover-art of books do their best to attract our eyes and pummel our senses with color and light. From it's jacket cover tothe last page, this novel, for as wonderful as it is, has none of that. It has a beauty all it's own that leaves the reader in quiet contemplation of life, love and the all encompassing pursuit of happiness. This is a story about a wedding being held at a quaint inn in the Berkshires, New York, centering around thestories of highschool classmates of Maine's Kidd Academy& the 25years since graduation. The cast of characters includesBridget - a woman who, after years of longing has once again found her childhood sweetheart and amidst divorce and pain from cancer treatments, she's finally marrying him. Bill, the man marrying her, deals withhis own divorce and a daughter who no longer trusts him, though still loves him fiercely. There's Agnes,a woman who is struggling. She isno longer a girl, but is having intensely rose-colored dreams of life& love while having an affair with a favorite past professor of the students. Theseand other colorful characters - Nora, the humble, unassuminginn keeper, Jerry, the Wall Street tycoon, Rob with his gentle spririt& a surprise lover- make this book well-rounded and full of quiet life. Ms. Shreve has produced a beautiful, classic novel that's fantastic to curl up to on a wet winter's day and while it doesn't have the excitement and adventure of a good mystery or the humor of a comedy, it has that almost untouchable, gentle magic that comes from excellent story-telling.
