The Hippopotamus
(Stephen Fry)
I have to say first that I love, love, love this book! If you want to laugh until you pee then read this novel by actor and writer Stephen Fry. It is the story of an opportunistic poet with a taste for the good life enjoyed by the gentry in England. This poet ingratiates himself with the titled crowd so as to guarantee himself invitations for weekends at their sumptuous country estates. What makes the novel so much fun is that Fry allows you to see the same situation from many different perspectives. First you will be privy to the protagonist's point of view which is naturally skewed based on the fact that not only is he an opportunist but also a drunk and lech. Then you will experience the same situation but from another perspective. It is an interesting way of writing because, like in life, there are always more than one perspectives to every situation and often they are both valid in their own right. The novel is so hilarious because Fry puts this drunken poet into the lives of very proper uppercrust people making the ensuing situations very funny. It is even worth reading just to experience the carnal lust that ensues between a man and a horse. It is not to be missed how descriptively Fry explains the feeling of a man making love to a horse. It is an irreverent funny read from a multi-talented man and it will leave you wishing that the novel would never end.
