Regeneration
(Pat Barker)
Pat Barker's Regeneration is first of trilogy Regeneration. It is a fictional account of the poet and soldier Siegfried Sassoon and physiologist W.H.R. Rivers encounter at the Craiglockhart War Hospital, merge with real facts surrounding the story. The storybegins withSassoon's Declaration against the war that was published by the times in 1917. Sassoon was a decorated soldier, who had become apathetic to the cost of war. He was not against the war; he was making a protest about how the war was being fought. Sassoon is convinced by his friend Robert Graves to accept a medical board hearing instead of the court marshal he feels he should have. Graves insist that the army will not let him make a martyr of himself, so Sassoon admits defeat and attends the Medical Board Hearing. He is sent to Craiglockhart, where the military believes he will be deemed fit to return and fight for the war. There he meets Wilfred Owen, and a friendship based on their love of poetry begins. Sassoon soon becomes Owen?s mentor, and help?s develop his poetic style. As this book was based on real events, there are many pages of Sassoon?s and Owens poetry within it. The book is a wonderful insight into the horrors war brings and the effect on the people involved in it.Pat Barker is a fantastic writer and the images created whilst reading generate a sense of foreboding at some points, whilst others a sense of hope for the future. I thoroughly recommend that anyone interested in the First World War, or who just like a good read, pick it up and settle down for a fantastic yarn!
