AbstractFyodor Dostoyevsky's Crime and PunishmentIn Fyodor Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment, the reader is forced to see though the eyes of a murderer.Rodion Romanovick Raskolnikov ("Rodya")is a proud, good-looking young, intellectual, student. We find him absent from university due to financial difficulties. Tutoring children does not provide him with the adequate means to support himself. He is plagued by want and gets into the habit of using the services of Alyona Ivanova, a blood-sucking pawn-broker and money-lender. At his wits' ends, Rodaya flirts intellectually with the idea of murdering Ms. Ivanova, until the idea grows on him. Then, he plots his revenge on her, never knowing if he can really carry it off. One day, he finds her alone. Remembering her cumulative acts of cruelty, and overcome by rage, he murders her with a stolen hatchet.Rodya swiftly takes her money and valuables and buries them in a pit. He is unsure whether his movements are noticed by two painters in an adjoining room. When the murder is announced, the police begin investigations. Rodya has a series of interviews with police officials in which the officer, Ilya Petrovitch, plays cat and mouse with him. However, after several interrogations which are conducted in the form of intellectual jousting, Rodya is excused. Later, one of the painters confesses to the crime. This event makes Rodya even more suspicious and unstable.His mother and sister Dounia come to town, just as he begins to fall into illness brought on by guilt, starvation, and intense paranoia. He believes people suspect him. After his sister is almost seduced by an employer, and then bad-mouthed by his wife, Dounia's wealthy suitor-turned- fiance, Luzhin, betrays condescension towards Dounia, believing she will put up with anything graciously, as he is doing her a favor by raising her from poverty to wealth and saving her from scandal. Rodya knows this and tries to break up the match.However, Rodya is ineffective as he becomes increasingly paranoid and consumed by guilt. He falls in love with Sofya, the young daughter of a drunkard who is forced by her family into prostitution.This novel is a harrowing account of Rodya's torturous journey towards redemption.
