I say no to divorce! She distinctly remembered the happening on the eve of her first performance of the Nauntanki journey. The plot was, "The Sage who humbled Menaka's vanity." Gulab as Menaka! Indeed she was, even without the makeup. Yes, physical features are the gift of God. Even without the makeup, she would have put the real Menaka to the dustbin The late-night audience, predominently male, was just hyponotized by her charming undulations.Menaka gave an initial burst of dancing with beautiful and graceful movements, while displaying modestly, her physical assets to the Sage!To seduce the Sages was her ordained duty! Before the audience! And the crowd constituting the younger generation, sons of traders and rich landlords responded in a way it should!...it should not have!Catcalls, lewd remarks, romantic, erotic expressions and a section of the crowd surged forward, to have a better view of Menaka's dance!A better view of Menaka! Her physical charms! Her curves and gyrations! To listen to her voice-sweetest of the sweet! Some mad wolves persisted with their cat calls! The wrestler decided to act!He jumped to the stage, seized the mike from Ranga and announced in a stern voice, for discipline. " If I hear such remarks, I will throw that animal out of the ground."...that one sentance from Meru had the desired effect.Pounding, hand-pounding at the hands of the Pahelwan..the last thing anyone wanted. After surveying the audience for a minute from all difrections, with eyes blazing, Meru handed back the mike to Ranga and the programme continued peacefully. From then onwards, he bacame rakhi-brother to Gulab. She sent the best rakhis she could procure to her borther and sought blessings and protection to which a sister was entitled to, assured of and got it.*****************"The Sage who humbled Menaks's vanity was a beautifully balanced play viewed from any angle and therefore, it attracted very large crowds, year after year. The shows were booked in advance. The Organizers met most of the demands of the troupe. They just put forward one condition-that Menaka's role must be performed by Gulab. No bargaining clause on this issue. No alternatives or duplicates were accepted. Several competing troupes tred to wean her away by offering higher packages, but the young and the intelligent she, took a principled stand. She was happy with the respect and love she commanded from her fellow artists and the welfare of her troupe was paramount to her, over self-interest. Nautanki addicts had seen her roles many many times, but, on each occasion, she excelled in the role, beating the previous best, looked more beautiful, in successive performances, added something new, romantic and original!Personally, as an artist, she seemed to radiate inner contentment. She put her heart and soul in dialogues and songs!--the audience vouchsafed! The plot was simple. Lord Indra, the Chief Sovereignof Haven and Presiding Deity of Rain, once made a statement before the august gathering of eminent Sages that in his Kingdom, an apsara of unparalled beauty and talent reigned. Her path for Realization was through music and dance . Given the challenge, she could humble a Sage of any merit and stature with her musical talents, dancing skills and physical charms! Many celebrated Sages received the statement of Lord Indra with utter contempt and they ordered him to arrange a confrontation with Menaka, to test their level of spiritual power vs. the maya, which they believed to have conquered once for all..The story unfolded in stages. How Menaka humbled the Sages, one after another, except one, before whose spiritual aura, she had to own defeat. She finally begged of that Sage for spiritual enlightenment and was blessed with Brahm Gyan!
