Song Of Susannah
(Stephen King)
This is the sixth book of the serial tale of "The Gunslinger" by Stephen King. The book opens the door on Roland, Eddie and Susannah Dean's "worlds" as another door between the worlds has opened and one of the three main charachters has stepped through. Possessed by a woman named Mia who is the daughter of no one and the soon to be mother of one "chap" as she calls him. The story begins with Eddie trying to find his way to Susannah's side, following her abduction through the door by the mental hitch-hiker and kidnapper Mia who is absolutely bent upon her mission of service to the Crimson King and his quest to break the beams that support the Dark Tower. The tower is of course the center of the multi-dimensional and multiple alternative world multiverse that King has created as the scenery for the Dark Tower Series. The story contains many twists, and turns, and suspenseful scenes which revolve around the end of the pregnancy of Susanah Dean, who was impregnated by a demon in the last installment of this enthralling tale. Though she doesn't look pregnant, Susannah is ushered through the door into an alternate New York some thirty plus years past her own time and her own New York from which she was pulled by Roland in The Drawing of the Three, by Mia, in labor, and suddenly the owner of two lower legs which are not her own. Her own legs were lost when she was pushed onto the tracks of a subway train by an evil and malicious charachter who continues to resurface throughout this series in memories and tales though not in person. He goes by many names one of which is Walter. Walter is also the savior and the vehicle by which Mia who was a disembodied succubi like spirit that longed to mother a child. She struck her bargainn with him to become "real" for the price of having this demon "chap" for the use of the Crimson King in his lengthy onslaught against the questors for the Tower and against the Tower itself. Mia wants only the few years that he offers her to be a mother, no matter what type of evil she is fostering upon the multiverse. The King's goal, to bring on Discordia and finally bring the Dark Tower to ruin, and his reign of power to accendancy. The ka-tet knows only that if they are seperated then the quest for the Tower is finished and the multiverse with them. Eddie, wants only his wife back and so opens the door attempting to follow. However the multiverse has other plans for him and instead grabs the 12 year old gunslinger Jake, the priest Father Callahan, who has been transported from 'Salems Lot to join the ka-tet, and who has found that he is a charachter in a book by a man named Stephen King, and Oy the billy bumbler, who cannot be mistaken for a dog in the world of New York circa 1999 into which they are thrown. Roland and Eddie are also to step through the door that stands with no frame, nothing behind it, and worlds through it. However they are going to Maine. To meet the mysterious Mr. King. This story is suitably amusing, enthralling, and draws some disturbing parallels between our world and the world of Stephen Kings fantasy multiverse. It has all of the elements that King has conjured in the previous installments of this tale and many new ones, which he blends into a facinating tale. You may wish to read the first five books before opening this one, but if you are familiar with just one or two of the series you will be more than able to follow the quest for the Tower in this installment. It is a fast paced, page turner that ties every book from Stephen Kings career into a facinating world all it's own.
