Sula
(Toni Morrison)

Publicidade
Sula is one of my all-time favorites by the award winning author, Toni Morrison. Set in the small Ohio town known as the Bottom, the story of an intense friendship between two women begins. Sula and Nel become friends when they are both twelve years old. Throughout their lives they share everything. On Nel?s wedding day Sula leaves the Bottom and stays away for ten years. On the day she returns, the robins start to die, which the town takes as an omen. Sula finds out that the Bottom has changed and her friend, Nel has also. Nel is married with three children and she belongs. However, Sula will never belong. Nobody in the small down understands her and for the most part, they fear her. They remember how she had her grandmother sent to a nursing home and how she was responsible for a child?s death years before - though they can?t prove it. Sula doesn?t seem to care about anyone or anything. She sleeps with every woman?s husband once then leaves him. Inevitably, Sula and Nel?s friendship is destroyed when she catches Sula and her husband having sex. Nel is crushed that her best friend could do something so awful to her. Didn?t she count? Yeas pass and Nel finally goes to visit her ex-friend on her deathbed to ask her, ?Why?? The answer that Sula gives isn?t enough to cut through the layers of pain. Nel leaves her friend to die alone, never forgiving her. When Sula finally passes on, the town seems to rejoice over her death. It?s not until after the funeral and at the burial site that Nel can finally finds forgiveness. She realizes that for so many years after her husband left, she hadn?t really been missing him. She?d been missing her childhood friend, Sula. The knowledge of that fills her with great sorrow and she can finally mourn for her friend.
