The Little Friend
(Donna Tartt)

Publicidade
Donna Tartt-The Little FriendI first started reading Donna Tartt's work when I stumbled across her first bestseller The Secret Society while living in Kenya for a year. While the book, a look at a group of sociopath students and their quasi-cultish following of a charismatic and very eccentric Vermont professor was interesting literary fare it left me wanting more of a connected plot. The Little Friend, Tartt's followup and also a bestseller, takes a decidedly different journey with quite a few twists and turns. Set in Alexandria, Mississippi some time in the 70's, the book tells the story of a little boy named Robin Cleaves Dusfresnes , whose gruesome death by lynching sends his family into a slow state of decay: Aunts come an go with their lives, the parents left behind see their marriage dissolve, maids are fired or quit inexplicably, and the unsolved murder leaves a mile-long trail of devastation in it's wake. The only one who seems functioning in the family is Robin's young sister Harriet, who is uncomfortably bright, forth-right, and determined to find who killed her brother.Harriet, painfully aware of the disfunction that is her family life, teams up with her friend Hely to explore places others won't go and racial barriers won't give in to. In the process, they learn less about Robin then the secrets of the town's local trouble-making family, the Ratliff's, whose drug habits and weird flirt with Appalachian folk religion leads to one big snake problem. While the adventure leads to a final confrontation that leaves the reader on the edge of their seat, it never really answers the question in the forefront of our minds- Who did it? Instead, we are left with more questions then answers. Luckily for Tartt, this leaves the reader in a state of awe over the masterful plotlines and characters of this tense and exciting novel..
