Quentins
(Maeve Binchy)
I was in the post office in a city close to here and was standing in a queue for a very long time.Surprise! Surprise! there on the book shelves was one of my favourite authors:Maeve Binchy.I hurried along and bought the book: Quentns ... it was in a book sale at a very competitive price. The stories are strong in this book and similar to other Maeve Binchy Books I have read ...the author has a natural talent for "flowery language" ... recently, in a discussion with a localagent ... I discovered this is seen here in the South as a great "plus" ... in previous parts of theUK it is seen as embellishment and a little bit self indulgent! However, I digress... the characters are well drawn and I note with amazement the introduction of Dickensian caricatures such as Blouse ... who appears significantly important in the text ...Don another important character appears in the Mafia film and Binchy refers to the Italian manner of addressing which is regarded by her characters as very "top drawer" "Derry" again is symbolic and certainly relevant to the narrative in the book! And last but not least "Kimberley"! plus "Dee" and "Muttie" ... I wondered where all the famousIrish expressions that Maeve Binchy is famous for have gone ... I suppose the way of the pony andtrap ... there are references to the email and the laptop ... its creeping in everywhere.Delightful reading ....
