Every christmas, "The Last Unicorn" is on TV as an animated movie. So, who doesn't know the story? The unicorn, the most fantastic and adorable of all creatures, one day is told by a butterfly that it is the last of its breed. But how is this possible? There have always been unicorns. Hidden and unrecognized, but they existed! They can't disappear all of a sudden! Or had they really been hunted by a red bull? What does a butterfly know? Yet, the words of the butterfly wouldn't stop bothering the unicorn. It has to find the others. And so it does, what no other unicorn has ever done before: It leaves the forest and goes on quest. A quest which takes it further from home and itself than it thought would be possible. It meets Mammy Fortuna, who makes apes, dogs and crocodiles look like monsters in order to fool humans. She meets Schmendrick the wizard, whose magic is far more than it seems to be and Molly Grue, disappointed with life, tough, but also friendly and warm. Together they are on their way to king Haggard. He, so they say, controlls the red bull. But before, the red bull finds them, he has scented the unicorn and startschasing them. There is no place where the unicorn can hide. Schmendrick can only save it by transforming it. But what does he do? He transforms it into the most impossible form an unicorn can adopt: A human being! Weakened, they start working for Haggard. A weird man, he doesn't take pleasure in anything but in the sight of the sea and his castle. And while Haggard's watching the sea and Lady Amalthea, who is the unicorn, his son tries to get her attention. Yet, whatever he does, she's not impressed with it. Like Haggard, she only has eyes for the sea. What's there, that focuses them so strong? Theinevitable happens. The unicorn has to face the red bull. And it has to decide, wether it wants to be a unicorn or a human. Awonderful novel! For every age. For kids, who dream of unicorns, wizards and witches but should learn that often things are not what they seem to be. For adults, who want to be bewitched. Or to read out. This book achieves something, no movie will ever achieve: A sentence, a page and you're bewitched until the very end. A book full of moral, without being cautionary, full of beauty, without being corny, full of sadness, without being melancholic. It ends sad, but in the rightful way. You will never forget this tale.
