The Grapes Of Wrath
(John Steinbeck)
Written during the Oklahoma Dust Bowl "The Grapes of Wrath" follows the misfortunes of a family who have just lost their home, and the big companies are coming to take over their land, but because they have no money to speak of, they are forced out of their homes. A sadly realistic tale of survival and how strongly a family bonds and just as quickly falls apart in times of crisis and need, the trials and tribulations faced by the family are upsetting as most never really get resolved. The young daughter is pregnant and her young husband eventually leaves her, with no thought of the baby to come. The story starts with the eldest son coming back from prison and finding his family getting ready to leave for the west in hopes of finding better fortunes. After all, out west was were everything was, the food, the citrus crops, the wealth but when everyone has the same idea for hundreds of miles around food becomes scarce and hard to come by, and when they stop at the camps for the evening in their rusty truck, (which eventually breaks down) the children are half starved from malnutrition, cardboard boxes become homes for most; including the main characters regardless of weather conditions. Steinbeck unleashes the harsh reality that was the dust bowl in a provocative, intriguing atmosphere, making every point hit home with remarkable accuracy. The ending is unexpected to say the least, while the beginning and main content of the book are enjoyably fast paced but with enough detail to get an idea of what the atmosphere was really like, the tone is set. Get caught in this whirlwind of despair and desperation that turns rapidly from despair to hope in a single sentence with such ease as only Steinbeck could be capable of creating. It is a must read for anyone with an interest in the great classics.
