Pride And Prejudice
(Jane Austen)

Publicidade
An outstanding piece of fiction, Pride and Prejudice has the element of romance and passion that no longer exists in today's world; it is an intellectual stimulation for the mind and spirit. The story centers around a family of young women, whose father is quiet and takes life with stride and ease and whose mother can be for lack of a better phrase, a spasmodic ditz. There are numerous main characters who each get themselves into interesting situations that are not always dealt with in a poised and sophisticated matter. Elizabeth is the second eldest and the fathers favorite as she is intelligent and understands there can be more to life than marriage to the first man who walks in the door. Jane is the eldest and while she finds happiness with a highly eligible man his sisters attempt to take him away from her because they do not think her good enough for their brother. The tiffs and miscommunication that results have a sense of comedic value that only Austen could achieve. The story only covers a few years of their lives mostly during high society seasons when everyone was at their respective homes which is indicative of the times. The novel takes place in the eighteen hundreds when women were expected to be un-self sufficient, they were expected to be prissy and mean to their rivals, Elizabeth and her sister Jane are a pleasant relief from the norm. As each sister grows and finds there is more to life then they imagined, and a hated suitor becomes a lover and gentle husband, the beauty of their stories becomes all more real.
The detail that Austen uses throughout the novel establishes the tone magnificently and makes the story that much more enjoyable, when an object was grand the description was grander when the object would have seemed small and insignificant to everyone else, Austen gives it the same attention to detail as everything else, even if it were a properly placed candle or a book mark on the mantle piece that gives more information about the family. A truly marvelous piece of fiction.
