In this romantic mystery, Julia Morris enters a relationship with a secretive young man who tells her little regarding his family and childhood except for a highly peculiar story regarding the importance of soul mates in his family. A soul mate is much more than just acknowledging there is only one person for you in the universe. A true soul mate is able to actually exchange part of their soul with their true love during lovemaking. Julia realizes that Seth is her true soul mate and can hardly wait to give him her soul even though Seth admits that the downside of having a soul mate is possible death if your soul mate perishes before you. Unbeknownst to Julia, Seth has been involved in some sort of criminal incident in Toronto, Canada and has been relocated to Southern California in an effort to hide him from the vengeful don, Joe Alletti. Joe sends a hit man named Adam Gable to rub out Seth and only a few weeks after Seth and Julia have exchanged their souls, Seth is killed in a fiery and suspicious car accident on a foggy Santa Barbara road. Julia is devastated by Seth?s death and remembers her lover?s cryptic story regarding his own parents and father?s subsequent suicide. She reassures her brother and family that she would never kill herself and resigns herself to a life without Seth. Nearly ten months later, Seth?s twin brother, Simon, who apparently was highly disliked by his brother, appears in Santa Barbara full of remorse. While he is Seth?s identical twin he has a limp from a skiing accident, long hair with a strange white streak starting at the brow, and a rambunctious and mischievous nature. While he is quite different from his deceased twin, Julia feels uncomfortable, particularly when she discovers the reason for the pair?s falling out. Simon had stolen his brother?s girlfriend two years earlier and was never forgiven by the more serious Seth. Julia does not realize she is being stalked by her lover?s killer, Adam Gable, and that she has gained a bodyguard in his twin. Simon, urged on by Julia?s brother, follows her down to LA to attend a Hispanic festival at UCLA, where Julia was a student for two years. Simon makes contact with his brother?s old bodyguard, Stan Garten, and warns him that Julia?s life is in as much danger as his brother?s was. Stan agrees to watch out for Adam Gable and unfortunately is waylaid by the hit man and deposited in the trunk of his car. Simon and Julia make a run for it and end up hiding in a hotel in Pasadena. Julia is nervous about her growing attraction Seth?s twin and tries to deny her feelings for him. Simon reassures her that Seth would be pleased, because as twins they also shared souls. She often feels a warm glow in her heart and is convinced that Seth is waiting for her in some sort of purgatory until she joins him in death. Strangely, Julia feels at peace with Simon, who promises to take care of her and love her forever. Simon relays that Seth had hidden an incriminating disk somewhere in Santa Barbara and Julia realizes that it might be hidden in the back of a painting she gave Seth the previous Christmas. Later that evening, while Simon sleeps her curiosity causes her to pull back the covers and discovers twin entwined roses with Seth and her initials tattooed on her new lover?s abdomen.
Confused and hysterical, Simon admits that he is indeed Seth and has returned to protect her. The twin, Simon, was a fictional cover given him by Witness Protection since it was suspected that Joe Alletti would try to have Seth killed. Simon admits his real name is Steven Hamilton he is still in danger from Joe Alletti, who by now has figured out that Julia most likely has the incriminating disk. The two flee to Santa Barbara, retrieve the disk, and are followed by Adam Gable who will stop at nothing to kill them. They decide to lay low for a while and hide in a mountainous campground but are discovered by the relentless Adam Gable. A high speed chase ensuesand on a treacherous mountain highway above Santa Barbara, Adam?s silver BMW goes over the cliff. Simon indicates that Adam?s death will not stop Joe Alletti?s pursuit of him and tells Julia to trust him. Stan Garten whisks her away as Simon?s car joins Adam?s over the steep embankment. Nearly a year later, a cheerful little second grader joins Julia Morris? classroom and lays an envelope upon her desk. Inside are two perfect roses and Julia heart burns in recognition. She meets Gertie?s ?uncle,? who looks totally different from Simon, but somehow draws her to him. The next June, as they begin their honeymoon in Maui, Julia touches the telltale tattoo on her new husband?s abdomen and repeats the words, ?Love never dies.? This romantic mystery has a truly unusual twist and entraps the reader in its spell. Highly recommended.
