Timberline Trail
(Loren Lockner)
Tia Heath has escaped to the majestic wilderness of Southern Alaska in an effort to heal from both the excruciating wounds of a broken love affair and the aftermath of the violent murder of her father?s business partner in which her own father had been implicated. A successful children?s author, she has tried to isolate herself from the chaos Andrew Carson?s death has caused. Tia however, is being stalked by two men: Steve Newcastle and Jon Simons, both of whom seek to hide their true agendas from her. Steve swears he is an ad executive who simply has gotten lost in an early winter storm and manages to stumble onto her cabin. Then Jon arrives a few hours later toting her rescued pet wolf Sugar, who has apparently been shot by hunters. Tia feeds and houses the two men as a blizzard sets in and reveals that her father has gone on a holiday. Soon Tia is caught up in a terrifying game where she is the pawn as she discovers her ex-fiancé Paul Dale has also arrived in Timberline to urgently warn her about something. Tia sends Steve and Jon on their ways after catching Jon ransacking her filing cabinets. When Paul doesn?t arrive Tia begins a frantic search for him and discovers his 4 x 4 has plunged down an embankment. As she searches the vehicle someone shoots at her, causing her to bolt into the snow-covered wilderness. Alone and on foot, she manages to hike to Jon Simons? tented camp, accompanied by her seriously injured wolf which refuses to leave her side. Jon helps heal Sugar and agrees to try and find out who is trying to kill her. Passions flare as Tia discovers the serious photographer has also lost someone close to him and finds she is falling in love with him. They return to her cabin and learn three men are holed up in her log home, one of them the superficially nice Steve. Someone shouts and warns her of danger and she and Jon manage to escape, but become separated. Desperately cold, Tia wanders the Alaskan wilderness for several hours, uncertain why she has become a target. Fortunately she manages to find Jon again and the next morning they manage to steal a snowmobile parked in Tia?s shed and head back to his camp, certain they will be able to contact the authorities and put everything right. Waiting for them is Tia?s ex-fiancé, Paul Dale, who has escaped his captors and believes Jon wishes to harm her. He informs Tia that Jon?s sister, Jenny, was murdered in Las Vegas and sent her some information tying Andrew Carson?s murder to corporate espionage. It appears that Tia?s family may somehow be responsible for her murder. Tia corners Jon and demands the truth. Jon finally admits his sister worked for her brother RK?s company and he is seeking her killer. He swears that he believes Tia is innocent of all wrong-doing, but Tia feels betrayed and staunchly refuses to trust Jon again. The pair, hoping to obtain help, sends Paul back to Timberline upon a snowmobile and return to Tia?s cabin only to discover that Tia?s own brother RK is holed up there. They escape using one of her brother?s vehicles and a wild chase ensues through the snowy Alaskan wilderness as Tia realizes her sibling is seeking some information on a project her father referred to as Timberline Trail. Jon and Tia try to escape by using a remote logging trail and after a fierce chase, Jon is wounded. Afraid he will be discovered by Steve and his partner RK, Tia takes off on foot, hoping to lead her brother away from Jon. RK corners her near Empress Lake and reveals that he has been stealing secrets from her father for a long time and that the Timberline Trail program was meant to be his crowning success. His jealousy and anger stun her as he admits his chief goal in life has been to ruin her father and get even with her because he believes she has stolen his father?s love. As RK raises his gun to end her life, Tia?s wolf Sugar leaps out of the trees and locks his jaws around her brother?s throat, determined to save who the wolf believes is the ?leader of the pack.? The police arrive but not in time to save RK. Jon mistakenly believes that Tia still loves her ex-fiancé Paul and decides it is high time to leave. Tia is heartbroken, but refuses to chase after a man she feels never really loved her. Tia returns to Timberline to work on her novels, but no longer feels content to remain alone in the wild. Her loneliness threatens to overwhelm her until Ben Oswald, Jon?s partner, informs her that the pair will be tracking wild dogs in South Africa and sends her a round trip plane ticket as a Christmas present. Tia arrives on Christmas day and manages to convince Jon Simons she really loves him. This is a rip-roaring romantic adventure set in the wilds of Alaska. I highly recommend curling up by the fire and enjoying this one!
