Night Flyer
(Tyan Wyss)
A six-year old boy, who during the day lives a normal existence, finds adventure and escape through his nightly dreams. In them, he becomes a night flyer. This rhyming shows how the boy leaves his home and soars upon a moonbeam while his body remains asleep in his homebound bed. He visits exciting places and sights like the Statue of Liberty, the Eiffel Tower, the Pyramids, Mt. Fuji, and the Taj Mahal. He must hurry because his time of freedom is limited and soon he will awaken. He spies a lovely desert isle and there a peg-legged pirate challenges him a fight. He possesses greater powers than the ordinary first grader and manages to outwit the pirate and free the enslaved natives. He rests for a while swimming among the fish and coral, proud of his achievements. The dawn is approaching and our hero must return to his own bed and reality. His mother hears about all his escapades and encourages him to have other wonderful adventures. He can hardly wait for the next night?s flight and the freedom his dreams allow. Our hero is a modern Tom Sawyer, living his dreams and being 'essentially' good. He respects the great things other cultures have to offer and he wants freedom, and 'dare I say it,' democracy for the enslaved peoples of the world. The illustrations are out of this world. I highly recommend this lovely book illustrated by native South African, Sarita Immelman.
