Gutierrez is naked in front of you. If you are interested in human nature this is the book you cannot miss as the writers leads you in his world, the Cuban world of the 80s, when people are starving and learn how to live with no means. He tells you about his life, his women, his passions and you can visualize him struggling for life day by day, struggling for food, struggling for love and against solitude. You can see him looking for a companion, looking for himself, looking for freedom. You can see him smoking cigars, drinking room and having sex. He writes "I was training myself not to take anything seriously... if your mistakes are too big, the only thing you can do is not to take it seriously. This is the only way to avoid sufference. A too long sufference can be fatal."
The expressions he uses are from the spoken language, bad words are not saved, and his style his effective and very poetic at the same time. Descriptions of people and places are so real that you can see them. Unfortunately, this book has never been published in Cuba, it was subjected to censorship as he depicts the cruel face of this magnificent island where it's difficult to survive but maybe for this same reason his characters seems to make the most of every moment looking for a little pleasure among the all the miseries of life.
