Pride And Prejudice
(JANE AUSTEN)

Publicidade
The novel was written by Jane Austen in the time of English romantics, but apart from this fact it does not even resemble the typical example of novel from that time - namely - a gothic novel. Gothic novel was first of all meant to keep the reader tensed, thrilled, to scary with supernatural elements in the presence of ghosts or to fascinate by magic and unexplainable effects. All those things are for sure impossible to be found as well as great , breathtaking passions. For this reason we will not call Pride and Prejudice the typical romantic novel. The name - romantic - in this case refers only to the literary period when it was created. What will we find there then? Certainly we will find there a perfect picture of higher middle social class represented in teh novel by such families as e.g. The Bingleys, The Darcys or Lady Catherine De Bourgh. Apart from them families from the middle class such as The Bennets or The Lucases are important part of this social picture as well. We will find there also the story of the arousing feeling , which may not be the one that moves passionately the reader, but whom we cannot deny the depth and a meaning. The love between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy, which in order to be fulfilled had to develop together with main characters. Both Lizzy and Darcy have to overcome their own pride and prejudice - the feelings which are fought down by those two persons who change their own values , believes and behaviour so that at the end of the novel be able to tell each other what they really feel. The declaration of love crowns the novel and satisfies the reader, who is the witness of their understanding of their own feelings who finally are able to appreciate them and to share them with each other and forgive the previous insults and prejudices. What is worth mentioning is also the fact that this book as one of few written by Jane Austen shows the main heroine Elizabeth Bennet as a character likeable by a potential reader. The heroines of her other novels usually have so many unpleasant qualities that readers do not necessarily sympatize with them. In this case however, Elizabeth is a very graceful character, full of the inner charm, inteligence, wit and a specific, courageous way of viewing the world. Surely she commits many mistakes especially in the case when by her behaviour she contradicts her own beliefs and values. However, it is very easy to forgive her all those drawbacks because her errors are very human. Whom of us did not happen to misjudge a situation or a person? Her mistakes and occasional inapropriatebehaviour can always be rationaly explained. What is more - while analyzing her mistakes we lear a big lesson of life and we may start to realize all the similar errors in our own lives, which is a great recommendation of this universal, timeless novel still fascinating in spite of the passing time..
