DREADFUL DRIVERS OF DELHI
Mr. Baig writes about the typical driver behavior on Delhi?s roads. Most of the migrants in Delhi come from villages and other rural areas and they drive their vehicles as if they were motorized bullock carts that have no brakes or regards for the rules of the road. All villagers fear God and religion but do not fear or care for rules of the road as they are man-made and no religious preacher or priest has preached to them about it. Even the traffic cops, who are mostly of the same rustic stock, share the same values, show a blind eye to the traffic unless there is a chance to extract a bribe form some unsuspecting urbanite.
Every driver makes sure to carry his ego with him while getting on to the roads. ?I, me and mine? seems to be the national mantra. While overtaking, the ego of most drivers will spur them to go faster than their comfortable speed to aggressively block the overtaker who will only be allowed to pass after loud honking and several futile efforts. The process not only endangers other traffic, it also shatters peace of mind and does not get either driver to his destination any quicker. The drivers also do not seem to understand that breaking a queue waiting at a traffic signal or railway crossing does not get them to their destinations any quicker. They may have the temporary satisfaction of getting some twenty vehicles ahead by overtaking from the left or right but will almost always have to also wait for traffic to get unclogged when the light turns GREEN or the barrier goes up.
The government is investing heavily in creating impressive highways but is doing nothing for road management and driver discipline.
