The British Countryside
(Drive Publications Ltd.)

Publicidade
It is worthy of mention that the other day a taxi driver claimed my attention with his reference to his current interest in the environment ... he had travelled all over the world ... and we shared stories about our experiences at home
and Overseas!

During a period of residency in the UK I bought this massive book on the British Countryside and kept it by my
side for years .. it has a wide variety of illustrations and inserts for the reader Bird Life was an issue
at that time and I had a large wooded garden at the edge of the city not that far from London ... and every morning ............................................ ........................................... ...................................................
the birds would settle on the lawn and it became a game with myself and my family to identify each and
every bird.

One afternoon, during a spell of excessively hot weather ... there had been a water shortage and my lawn was
filling up with with large brown patches covered by thick weeds! Nobody in the area would dare to water the
lawn or indeed the flora and fauna in our immensely attractive location. - could die for all it mattered locally!

However, I left the patio door open to allow a breathe of fresh air to infiltrate the sitting room ... and went off
about my business in the kitchen to prepare lunch for myself and some friends ... I heard a lot of noise in the room next to the dining room which was adjacent to the kitchen ... and I quickly ran into the sitting room and there in the room was a trapped bird ... it was flying low and flew straight into the room ... there was nobody around except my next door neightbour ... I found the bird's zooming about the room rather terrifying ... my next door neighbour a gentlemen of rank and wealth ... exclaimed in a terrified voice:

"I've seen action on the front line ... killings and so on ... but I assure you, I cannot deal with birds in sitting rooms dead or otherwise" He insisted that I deal with this myself. I did ... I cut the whole house in two and finally the bird flew round to the point of exhaustion ... and lay on the patio . dead!

I choose here page 59 from this very large book and there are illustrations of birds from top to bottom of the page ... in particular the Jackdaw attracts attention as it is supposed to pick up rings and things if it sees them lying on the bird table! What a place ... full of zooming flying birds. The raven much written about in stories and poems ... is featured here among other birds .... they used to say "her hair was as dark as the raven's wing!"

At the end of a very hot busy weekend I was digging at the bottom of the garden and to my horror I found a big English snake ... no more of this I thought ... I called for my partner to come and deal with it ... I used to run to the library and "read" up all the notes on wildlife in Britain ... but sometimes it was more than my life was worth to encounter "nature in the raw"....

Interesting reading ....
