This book is delightfully entertaining, provided that you can tolerate the slightly fatuous, childish tone that creeps in sometimes when Douglas Adams pushes us to suspend disbelief just a little too far. Following the first adventure of Arthur Dent, rescued by his friend Ford just before the destruction of Earth, this book has some thoroughly entertaining characters, some comedic dialogue and an interesting, if far-fetched plot. Arthur and Ford, once they've sorted through some of their hitchhiking difficulties, find themselves on a ship with the president of the universe, a suicidally depressed robot and a girl that Arthur had rather hoped to get it on with before Zaphod the president whisked her away. Between them they go on a journey to discover why Zaphod could have possibly needed to hijack the universe's newest spaceship, and why, oh why the destruction of Earth is such a big deal.If you are looking for something light and fluffy, entertaining and unchallenging, then this book is probably for you. This has my specific recommendation for younger readers.
