This is a Newbery Honor Winner; it is also on the Sunshine State Readers list and the Hillsborough, Fl list of BOB (battle of the books) for 2006-2007 academic year. This is on a 5.8 reading level as stated on the bottom back of the cover.
With the rise of popularity in juvenile fiction this is a fantastic read for anyone involved with children, nature, environmental causes, and literacy. This is an inspirational book for anyone interested in developing their love for nature, and the wonderful creation of wolves.
This tale is about a family of wolves that live deep in the Minnesota forest. The story starts with the birth of new cubs and follows the "pack" through their trials and tribulations of living in the wild. There are adventures of pride and compassion on an earth lovers scale.
The author does a wonderful job at humanizing the feelings and love that these creatures develop and stand for. The novice learner as well as the advanced learner will appreciate truth that is explained in an easily understood way, which is particularly important for our younger readers.
I do warn that some tissues maybe needed in a couple of insistences in the story. The journey that this family survives teaches us all the importance of supporting each other through life?s ups and downs. It also explains the different parts we each play in our own families and surroundings and how each one of us is special and important in our unique way.
I am confident that by the end of this book the reader will share their love for wolves as well as nature with this excellent author. I know that I am curious to read other books by Ms. Bauer and learn other valuable lessons that she feels inspired to share with the rest of us.
