From Contented Baby To Confident Child
(Gina Ford)
The infamous Gina Ford's second book, From Contented Baby to Confident Child is a guide to parental problem solving in the first three years of their child's life. For those of you who haven't heard of Gina Ford (not many new mothers around who haven't), she's an experienced, (albeit childless), nanny/childminder/advicegiver. Ford is very much old school and proud of it. She endorces strict routines in which the parent is definitely the one in charge. Many of her views have been heavily criticised, especially those connected to breastfeeding (NO demand feeding allowed) and sleeping (put that baby down and let them cry til they fall asleep). Saying all that, and as a mother who breastfed for 19 months and still doesn't let her 2 year old cry herself to sleep, this book is interesting and does have some good advice. Personally, I disagree with Ford's views for very young children, but once they become toddlers, be as strict as you want girl! The book has a number of different sections: the first half is problems in the first year: sleeping, feeding, crying; and the second half is about toddlerhood, as I mentioned before, in my opinion, the more interesting section, covering subjects such as potty training, tantrums, fighting over food, sleeping problems, discipline etc. It is clearly written, giving examples of case histories where necessary. If Gina Ford is taken for what she is and not the guru of parenting that some people believe, I think there is some good advice in the book, and bad advice, take what suits you as an individual. Parenting is one of those things that everyone thinks they are doing the best and in the end their children always think their childhood was the worst. These kinds of books are designed to give a different point of view and to be a little bit interesting, nothing more. Don't forget that instinct is most important in bringing up children, because in the end, only you, the parents, know what's best. Hope this review has helped someone. I'd be happy to hear comments.
