The Quiet American
(GRAHAM GREENE)

Publicidade
"I never knew a man who had better motives for all the trouble he caused." This is a quote from the seasoned English foreign correspondent Fowler, when speaking of Pyle, the idealistic young American who funds a secret and dangerous "Third Force" in the political reconstruction of Vietnam. Pyle's activities cause many deaths, but in his opinion the dead are expendable and even necessary in the fight for independence. Fowler warns Pyle these atrocities will be avenged, but he doesn't listen. Despite their differences they become good friends. Pyle's motives for being in Vietnam are political but Fowler's only reason for remaining is to get a divorce so he can marry Phuong, a beautiful young Vietnamese woman. Phuong wants to find a husband who will take her away from Vietnam. When Fowler's wife refuses to divorce him Pyle declares his love and proposes marriage with what he wrongly imagines is Fowler's blessing. She moves out of Fowler's apartment and into Pyle's, which leaves the correspondent broken hearted. When he's asked by an opposing political faction to help kill the American, Fowler agrees. Pyle is ambushed and becomes as quiet an American as any dead American can be. Fowler's wife finally agrees to a divorce and as the fighting in Vietnam continues, Phuong forgets her anguish over Pyle's death and prepares for her wedding to Fowler and the subsequent move to London. This is an engrossing story set against a backdrop of intrigue, bombings, killings and personal ambitons. You don't have to be interested in poliitcs or history to enjoy this book.
