Hey All Ye Veggies out there !

A lot of Myths exist with regard to Vegetarians,
particularly in the west.

The Myths & Facts :

Myth 1
All vegetarians are tree huggers & animal-rights activists.

Research shows that most people are vegetarians as they
appreciate the health benefits. Concern for animal rights
is only the second most common reason. Even the people who
care for animal rights say that health is the main reason
that they are vegetarian.

Myth 2
Vegetarians don't get enough protein.

At one time nutritionists and dietitians said this - but
not any more. Now it is well known that vegetarian diets
can include a lot of protein. Vegetarians in fact avoid the
excessive amount of protein found in the typical non-veg
diet. If you eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, cereals
and lentils, then your levels of protein intake are
sufficient.

Myth 3
Vegetarians have calcium deficiency.

This myth is more with regard to vegans - vegetarians who
don't consume any animal products like milk. Somehow, this
belief came about that the only good source of calcium is
milk and cheese. Though, milk does have a good quantity of
calcium, but so do many vegetables, especially green, leafy
ones. In reality, vegetarians have lesser incidence of
osteoporosis (a deficiency of calcium that leads to weak
bones) because the body absorbs the calcium they eat more
easily during digestion.

Myth 4
Vegetarian diets aren't balanced, so vegetarians risk their
health for their principles.

Firstly, vegetarian diets aren't imbalanced. They have a
good proportion of complex carbohydrates, proteins and fat -
3 macro nutrients that are the essential to any diet.
Also, vegetarian food sources i.e. plants are by and large
have higher quantities of most of micro-nutrients. Another
way to look at it is : The average meat eater consumes one
or fewer servings of vegetables a day and no servings of
fruit. If a meat eater does eat a vegetable, most likely
it'll be something like a fried potato. So "Out of balance"
is an entirely subjective term in this case.

Myth 5
Vegetarian diets are okay for a adults but kids need meat
for proper development.

This assumes that protein from plants isn't as good as
protein from meat. The truth is, proteins are proteins.
They all are made from amino acids. Kids need 10 essential
amino acids to grow and develop properly. These amino acids
are as widely found in plants as they are in meat.
