Status Quo
(Anthony W.Kimani)
STATUS QUO This is an abstract depicting the injustices pervading sahau villlage (a remote village in rural kenya ) The needy are oppressed by their leaders The policemen turfed out people out of their drinking dens so that they could listen to the area member of parliament .The local women?s guild had invoked chief mlafi to come to their aid as their children had immersed themselves in illicit liquor and were on the verge debauchery . "Unlicensed liquor will be history in sahau.please vote wisely for the betterment of sahau as elections are near " These were some of the platitudes from the mp's discourse .Mr zindua a teacher analysed the mp's sentiments.?These were the normal empty talks from our leaders who only frequent their constituencies whenever elections are nigh ." "Ofcourse -the refrains they always gibber about .Where are the farms for our young men to till? Where are the jobs to prevent them from the said dalliance ?can the sahau youths really afford legalised beer ?"Observed his colleague Mr.kandia . Three weeks after the mp's visit ,there was pandemonium in a farmers farm .The workers were demanding their arrears amongst other grievances ."Those of you who shall not wait can leave my farm ! ,"thundered Mr Magegu the farms owner . The workers are not cowed by the farmer's threats .They resolved to seek help from their local chief ."Thats very serious! I will see to it that he is summoned here immediately " remarked the chief . at about 5 pm in the evening the farm labourers converged at the police station where the chief took no time to deliver his verdict ."Nyinyi mnacheza na kazi? (are you playing around with work).don?t you know that Mr Magegu is an important man in Sahau ?". If you don't resume your duties now ,you shall all be sacked ". the workers were dumbfounded ; they only realised later that the chief had been suborned to cover-up the matter .they had no choice other than to endure untold mistreatment at the farm. Mr Zinduas literature class was in session .He was expounding the Animal Farm with his students .Wambui was the daughter of Mr kamau (a farm laborer in Magegu's farm )."My father is a casual worker in a farm .He receives peanuts and that is why he and his workmates downed their tools recently -they sought help from the chief who later bribed by the farm owner .There was tumultuous applause from the class after the sad narration . the teacher stressed that it was crystal clear that the local leaders worked in cahoots with the oppressive employers . The following morning ,Mr zindua was summoned to the principal's office .The corpulent school head had eavesdropped on the teacher's tirade to the authorities ."There was absolutely no sedition in my comparison .The students are disillusioned from political shenanigans pervading Sahau;as a matter of fact, one of my students happens to be the daughter of one of Magegu's employee ".Expostulated the literature teacher ."I see,how brilliant of you to give such pertinent examples to your students .please forgive my petulence ",begged the school head . Two months later ,Mr Zindua who was now obsessed with emancipating Sahau from repression ,convened a meeting .Most farm workers, fishermen and villagers attended ."My fellow villagers, for how long will we suffer under the thralldom of these parasites ?They live by our sweat yet very few of us can even afford to travel to the city ! Are you aware that your chief Mr Mlafi, Mr Magegu and other callous business men do export your fish ? what do you get in return ? Morsels I tell you ! Mr Magegu is known to exploit his workers and nothing is been done about it. We must boycott all activities starting tomorrow(amid an applause from the crowd).Suddenly, the people were repulsed by a gang of askaris(policemen)who pounced on every one they came across.People scampered away and the teacher was not spared either as he too, skedaddled away. The meeting was quelled in fifteen minutes. A month after the meeting the chief and his two accomplices hired emissaries to ascertain the teacher's drinking resorts .The following morning he was found dead in an upstairs bar apartment .The patrons recounted how he died after a binge the night before . Sahau denizens cultivated inveterate hatred towards the authorities .This forced them to vote out the current regime the following year .The state commenced an inquest. "Your honour ,Mr Zindua disclosed to me that chief Mlafi had threatened him with death if he did not stop challenging the authorities .Moreover ,Florence was the barmaid who served him beer on that fateful day .Prior to her death she divulged to me that it was the chief and Mr Magegu who forced her to lace his beer with poison. They gave her fifty thousand shillings to keep mum over the incident ." The judge observed that there was compelling evidence to link the two with the murder of MrZindua and Florence the bar maid ."I therefore sentence you to life imprisonment with no possibility of parole .As for you Mr Tukule, you will serve 25 years in prison for collusion and compromise of teaching ethics due to greed . The three men wailed as the judge made his ruling Their dream of maintaining the status quo was quashed .
