For The Roses
(Julie Garwood)

Publicidade
A quartet of runaways rescues a baby abandoned in New York in early 1860.
All four of the brothers were running from something. Adam, the oldest at 13, was a runaway slave. Douglas, an 11 year old pickpocket, had made an art form of dodging the law. Cole, who had run from his abusive father on his ninth birthday, had survived on his own for a year before he found the others. Travis had escaped from an orphanage when he was 9 and attached himself to Adam.
Adam (smart, protective and generous) was the only one with a real live Mama. He taught the others to read and write. Cole?s mom had died giving birth to him. He thought it was his duty to protect the world; so, he learned how to use a gun. Douglas was almost positive both his parents were dead. He was gentle and quiet and strong and had a way with animals. Travis was small for his age; so, he learned how to get what he wanted through charm. Travis? parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clayborne, had been too poor to raise a child and left him at an orphanage. Since Travis was the only one the authorities were not chasing, the others decided to call themselves Clayborne.
The Clayborne brothers were fiercely loyal to each other. They lived in an alley in New York City. At night, they took turns sleeping and watching for trouble. One night while Douglas was watching, a frightened woman hid a basket in the trash in their alley and ran. Adam heard crying from inside and found a baby girl with a torn page from a Bible. The woman had an envelope full of money. The page had a date, but the name was illegible. They decided to name the baby Mary Rose.
The boys didn?t realize that Mary Rose had been kidnapped. They used the money in the envelope to travel out west and buy a ranch in Montana. Mary Rose went to boarding school. They all wrote to Mama Rose, who still lived in the south and asked her to come live with them on the ranch. She couldn?t leave because of the war and the danger.
Then one day a lawyer came to Montana. Someone from the boarding school had told him that Mary Rose bore a striking resemblance to Lady Agnes Elliot, a woman from England who died of grief after her baby girl was kidnapped.
