The Story of an Hour

Mr. Brently Mallard?s name headed the ?killed? list
when the intelligence report of the railroad accident was
received at the newspaper office. Richards was the first
one to know what had happened. He and Josephine, Mrs.
Mallard?s sister, took great care in breaking the dim news
of her husband?s death to her, considering she had a heart
disease.

She at once broke down in her sister?s arms with an
impulsive feeling of abandonment? unlike some other women
who fail to accept the situation at once. When the eruption
of woe had swept past, she left for her room. She wished to
be alone and allowed none to follow her. There in her room,
facing the window was an armchair into which she sank. The
view from the window was that of treetops, vibrant with new
life. The distant notes of a song reached her ears.

She sat with her head thrown back on the cushion, a
serene expression on her face? that which showed a tailored
repression along with a certain strength. Her stare at the
blue sky said she was in the middle of some contemplation.
She felt something within her but was unable to name it.
The feeling was subtle yet strong, and elusive.

A little whisper escaped her lips. She continued
saying it, ?free, free, free!? the empty stare vanished
from her eyes. They remained eager and clear. She felt an
enormous joy and knew that it was not insignificant.

A feeling of liberation took over her. She knew she
would begin living for her self and no one else. There was
not going to be an ?authoritative will? conquering hers any
longer. She repeated ?Free! Body and soul free!? under her
breathe over and again.

Concerned, Josephine tried coming inside but she asked to
be left alone. Later, she opened her door to the repeated
requests of her sister. They walked down to the hall and
Mrs. Mallard noticed someone trying to open the door from
the outside. There entered Mr. Mallard, far from ?killed?,
just slightly travel worn. He stood surprised by
Josephine?s sharp look and Richards? swift attempt to
screen him from his wife?s view. It was too late though.
The doctors arrived and said she had died of heart disease -
died of a - ?joy that kills?.
