The King for One Year.II Well, what became of a mortal stranded on unknown shores and surrounded by strange people who treated him like a king? He was called ?Maharaj? or ?Your Majesty? by these strange people. His slightest wish was obeyed fleetingly. His awestruck mind wondered if it was an illusion or a dream. Among these quaint folks stood one old man, he answered his thoughts, ?Although we appear like men, we are not human beings. We are ghosts. Many years ago we prayed for a human king, because we wanted an intelligent human to govern us. From that day there is no absence of human kings. Every year somebody comes here and we make him king for one year - only for one year. At the end of the year he has to leave everything. There is a desert land. We take him there by ship and leave him there. Nothing is available there except fruits. He will have to work hard and dig sand to get water. There after there is a new human king every year and the system go on. The slave king asked ' Tell me about the nature of the kings before me.' The old ghost replied ?They were all careless and whimsical. They used to spend the year living luxuriously, rejoicing and enjoying themselves. They never gave a thought to what will happen at the end of the year.' The new king listened attentively. He could not sleep for a few nights thinking of what will happen at the end of the year. Then he called the learned and wise men of his kingdom. He asked them, 'Oh learned men please advise me, how I shall be prepared for the awful day at the end of the Year?? The oldest man among them replied ' Maharaj when you came here you had nothing. At the end of the year when you will go to the desert land you will have nothing with you. But this one year is yours. We will obey whatever you order us to do. I advise you, without delay send skilled men to that desert land. They will build houses, make gardens and do farming. This one year they will make the desert suitable to live in. If the land becomes habitable, other people will also go there. So prepare for your future action without delay.? The king immediately sent skilled men, goods, plants, seeds and machines. He ordered them to turn the desert into a modern city. The year passed by quickly. At the end of the year his subjects took off his royal dress and crown. They dressed him in the same clothes he had worn when he had come there a year ago. They send him to the desert land by a ship. But the land was no longer a desert. Instead there was a wonderful city. There were beautiful houses, roads, lakes, gardens, markets and the city was full of people. A royal throne had been prepared for him. People rejoiced when he arrived. They greeted him sincerely, welcoming him by blowing trumpets and conch shells. They placed him on the royal seat. The slave was no longer a king of one year. Now he was now a real king. He lived in his kingdom happily and reigned finely until his death. Abstract by Nandita Datta
