Bhagvat Gita- Chapter 1 Arjunavishadyoga
(Mahamuni Ved Vyas)
Hi friends, Bhagvat Gita is divided into eighteen chapters and 1800 shlokas that give a detailed discription of the entire essense of the Four Vedas, The Vedangas and the Upanishads.Ved Vyasji have tried to describe human trauma and quest of humanity for knowlege, wisdom, self attainment, enlightenment and satisfaction in this book which is put in poetic form with two major charachters..a visionary The Almighty God Himself and an illusion a Human Being and all this being described to a blind kind called Dhritarastra by an able narrator called Sanjaya. Dhritarastra symbolises a powerful man who turns a blind eye to the bad deeds of his son and doesnt change his attitude even after listening from the narrator the narrations of these spiritual words from the Great God Himself. Lets start with the first chapter of this Bhagvat Gita called the Arjuna Vishad Yoga. Dhritarastra-the Blind king asks sanjaya to tell him the contents of the happenings in the Kurukshetra or the warfront details between his sons and the Pandavas and Sanjaya starts to describe. He tells the King, about various warriors on both the sides viz the Bhima, Arjuna, Yuyudhan, Virat, Kashiraj,Kuntibhoj, Satyaki (Lord Krishna's bodyguard) on the Pandavas and Bhisma,Drona,Krupacharya,Ashwathama,Vikarna,Somadatta and Jayadratha as few of the Greatest of warriors all arranged in lines and ready to face each other on the battlefield. As soon as the war is to begin and the drums and trumpets begin, Arjuna, asks Shri Krishna to take his Chariot in between the two armies so that he has a very good look at those whome he wants to have battle with to which Lord Krishna Obliges and takes Arjunas chariot in between the two armies.Arjuna sees the warriors on both the sides which include all his great grandfather Bhisma, His Guru Drona,Krupacharya and his brothers, inlaws and friends and feels its not worth fighting the war..that even if he gets victory, how can he enjoy it on copses of so many of his own tribe and relatives. He feels, killing of so many people would lead to demolishing of the Kula-the basic unit of Aryan tribe and with no tribehead, the woman would go wayward and lead to varna-sankara(mixing of varnas) and this in turn would lead to ancestors being put to hell.He felt he would not be a partner in crime and would prefer being killed than kill his relatives.Saying this he drops his bow and sits down on the chariot. If we take logical meaning of what is being said in the first chapter,it implies that as a common man we are always placed in a battlefield in different kind of conditions wherein we loose our capacity to take decisions and feel frigtenend about the future. Here,we start think wrong and do wrong things at wrong time. The five horses of the chariot of Arjuna represents the five vices- the Kama, Krodh, Lobh, mada, Matsar. The chariot is the mind and Charoteer is the Soul, which is represented by Lord Krishna here. Hence,at time when everything goes odd on this battlefield which we are placed in everyday,we need to trust the Charoteer almighty God to direct us the right path. This is what Arjuna did and i would follow in the chapter 2 which is the Sankhya Yoga. Jai Shri Krishna.
