The Impossible Virgin
(Peter O;Donnell)
The title is an immediate eye-catcher, like most of those in the Modesty Blaise series of thrillers (e.g. I, Lucifer, A Taste for Death), but it does unfortunately allow the 1960's and 70's comparison with the James Bond books to drag on. Of course, at the time marketing did little to stop this and actually helped by over-emphasizing the sex and violence and ignoring the sly and clever humour. Hopefully readers have smartened up and seen that O'Donnell was a talented storyteller with a great sense of humour whose work is never depressing and always entertaining. In 1962, first in comic and then in book form, O'Donnell created Modesty Blaise, a woman who didn't need women's liberation to set her free. She is neither a wilting violet who needs a man's arm on which to support herself, nor a sluttish bimbo who has the luck of a dozen women. Modesty is quite capable of taking on and defeating some extremely nasty and inventive bad guys, then head off to indulge herself in haute couture. Then, as if it wasn't enough to create the first of this new breed of women, O'Donnell also went on to create an amazing partnership, usually ignored, between Modesty and her right-hand man, Willie Garvin - also unique and fascinating. There is neither repressed sexual tension nor male chauvinism in their relationship, a creative piece of genius that has enabled the books to retain their power despite becoming slightly dated (not that this affects the story).'The Impossible Virgin' is one of the most inventive and amusing of the series. The villiams are uniquely and thoroughly unpleasant; the plot is a fabulously fantastic journey which twists and twirls without once losing its direction; there is an impossible escape; some of the best described battles ANYWHERE; and the best book title pun I've read in years!! Sadly, there will be no more Peter O'Donnell books, but the body of work he left behind is well worth reading over and over again for sheer enjoyment! This abstract was checked by WhiteSmoke Solution.
