Daddy Long Legs is one of those classics that stand the test of time. Written by Jean Webster in1912, it belongs to the ?school girl romance? genre and narrates the story of Jerusha Abbot [?Judy?], an orphan of the Joseph Grier Home. A trustee of the orphanage, who wishes to remain anonymous, sponsors Jerushas? college education. Judy dubs him ?Daddy Long Legs? and the book is in the form of her letters to him.
The language is in a conversational, simple schoolgirl style alright, but its? appeal goes straight to the heart. Replete with humour, wit, a never-say-die spirit and sprinkled liberally with nuggets of wisdom and compassion, it has the reader rooting for Judy every inch of the way.
You can?t but help laugh and cry with her, as she puts behind her asylum life and discovers a whole new world outside. She holds her own with the snooty Julia Pendleton, basks in the warmth of Sally MacBride?s friendship and family, revels in the pleasure of books and new dresses, experiences the joys and travails of becoming an author, throws herself into life on a farm and strikes up a relationship with Julia?s ?Uncle Jervie? and Sally?s brother Jimmy.
You watch Judy grow up as she gamely makes her way through the ups and downs of four years of college. When love comes calling, you are aware of it long before the heroine, as also of the identity of her benefactor. However, this doesn?t detract from the joy of the happily-ever-after fairy tale ending, which is just what you want for Judy.
The book is charmingly illustrated with line drawings by the author, which have an appeal all of their own. Daddy Long Leg?s effervescent, spunky heroine cannot but tug at your heartstrings. The book has a freshness that endures. Write your abstract here.
