A private investigator poses as a thief to catch a traitor while romancing a bookish beauty whose brother is his prime suspect.
Rowena Riverstone is a near sighted, pleasingly plumb young lady who chooses not to pay attention to the latest fashions and generally wears her copper colored, shoulder length hair tied up in a bun. She is clever, idealistic and socially inept. Her hobbies include reading, philosophy and chess. She also writes passionate essays for a London newspaper (which some consider seditious) advocating social reform signed with the initials MRR.
After her parents died, Rowena inherited a modest estate in the country. Her brother Edward (who works in the Foreign Affairs office in London) receives a small monthly allowance. Rowena enjoys her quiet life in the country; but realizes she does not have the political power to change things. When Rowena?s friend Pearl marries the rich and powerful Earl of Hardwyck, the countess agrees to introduce her friend to people of influence who are willing and able to bring about social change. One such person is Noel Paxton.
Noel Paxton was part of a special tactics unit that reported directly to General Wellington during the Napoleonic Wars. After the war, Noel began working as a private investigator. Nevertheless, occasionally, he utilizes the skills he learned in the army to assist the British Secret Service. Noel?s latest assignment is to find the Saint of Seven Dials, who his superiors believe may be a secret agent known only as the Black Bishop. Noel soon discovers that Lord Hardwyck is the Saint; but he is not certain that the Earl is the Black Bishop. With Lord Hardwyck?s help, Noel poses as the Saint in order to search for the traitor.
There was a time when Noel believed that MRR was either the Saint or The Black Bishop. After discovering the identity of the Saint, Noel concludes that MRR is the traitor. When he learns Rowena?s brother Edward works in the foreign affairs office, he becomes convinced that MRR stands for Mr. Riverstone. Noel courts Rowena so he can gain her confidence and keep an eye on her brother.
Edward is not as smart as his sister is in addition to being a compulsive gambler. Lately, his luck has been all-bad. One of his creditors wants to be paid with government information. Loyal but weak, Edward stalls and asks his brilliant sister Rowena if she has any ideas. Rowena thinks the best thing to do is ask the Saint for help.Noel is tracking the Bishop who is harassing Edward who turns to Rowena who tries to find the Saint who is tracking MRR whom he thinks is a traitor. A certain Special Forces operative turned private investigator should learn not to jump to conclusions.
