"spring And All"
(William Carlos Williams)
William Carlos Williams is an extraordinary poet who maintains a poetic style all of his own. This is exemplified in the poem ?Spring and All?. ?Spring and All? is a the poet?s description of spring time unfurl. The poem looks from the unsavory late winter moments with the mud and dull scenery to the earth beginning to flourish with color and signs of life. The beginning of the poem would imply a staunch passerby less concerned with the birth of nature?s wonders and more concerned they physical features such as buildings. In drawing the attention to the hospital, the poet lays the groundwork for the reader to envision the remaining scene in their mind. Much like any building, you start with a foundation. Hospitals bring to mind a certain image in the mind of all. The hospital is representative of the dreary end of winter. In contrast to the gloom the world starts to blossom. Williams introduces color into the description slowly, still taking the time to signify the change of the seasons. The slow trickle of color is similar to the learning process we as humans follow. In the beginning, the experience is slow until we grasp it. Then we flourish. We learn and we grow until we reach the realization as to whom we are and who want to be. Personalities changing like the seasons as times passes. Clarity and dignity, stark as it may be, are simply two facets of what we seek as we develop into adults.
