In front of Capitol at Rome, addressing a crowd of Tribunes and Senators, Saturninus, first - born son of the deceased Roman Emperor, pleads his right to succeed his father. The Bassianus his brother also puts forward his claim. At this moment Marcus Andronicus arrives, bearing the disputed crown. He comes to plead the cause of his brother, Titus Andronicus, who has shown great brewery and skills as a general against the Goths. On hearing this appeal both Bassianus and Saturninus agree to abide by decision of the people. A coffin is brought into the capitol; Lucius and Quintius, sons of Titus Anronicus following it. Many Goth prisoners are in the procession. As the coffin is being placed in the tomb Lucius asks his father to him ?the proudest prisoner of the Goths? that he may kill as his own brother had been killed. Titus gives him Alarbus, the eldest son of Tamora, Queen of the Goths. He is slain immediately, and his brother Marcus also comes to entreat him and weeps over the fallen, and his brother Marcus also comes to entreat him to become a candidate for the throne; as do also his sons. He declines the honour. The people then request Titus to choose, and Saturnicus is elected. The newly- appointed Emperor than asks the hand of Lavinian the daughter of Titus. Whereupon Bassianaus seizes Lavinia, claming her as his bride. Her father being prevented following her by Mutius, runs his son through declaring him to be a trailor. Saturnicus now refuses to marry Lavinia and chooses instead Tamora, queen of the Goths, and is married to her fortwith; as are also Lavinia and Bassianus. Now Tamora?s sons Demetrius and Chiron both wished to marry Lavinia. Aron, bellowed by Tamora, suggest that they should seize her from Bassianaus. Tamora rouses her sons to fury. Demetrius stabs Bassianus and terfuge Tamore persuade Saturninus that Martius and Quintius have murderded Bassia They are condemned to be executed and Lucius is to be banished. Lavina is brought back by her uncle, Marcus Andronicus, cruelly mutilated; her tongue has been cut off. She cannot say who did it. Lucius bids his father and sister farewell saying he will go to the Goths and excite them to war on Rome. In order to enable Lavina to tell them who mutilated her, Marcus teaches her to write on the sand with a stick in her mounth the name of her assailants ? she writes Chirom and Demetrius. The Goths march on Rome under the leadership of Lucius Andronicus. Aaron is captured and confesses everything, divulging Tamora?s plot against Titus. Titus pretends to agree to attend a banquet to the emperor and empress and with peace is to be made. Titus, following in the steps of Virginius, slays his outraged daughter, han=ving already slain Chiron and Demetrius. He then slays Tamora. Saturninus slays Titus, and with Lucius slays the Emperor. Lucius explains the wrongs that have been done to his family and is elected Emperor. Aaron is condemned to be half buried and left to starve to death.
