Chapter 7: The politics behind promotionsThe general myth and firm faith that non-political people have is the simple notion that promotions are tied with the performance of the employees. But you think about the 5-6 newly promoted employees you know; do all of them had the calibre to get promoted? Promotions are not always given to high performing people in office. Promotions depend on number of factors and situations at the time of promotions. Promotions and growth are a mix of numerous human capabilities, complexes and desires. A promotion is that trophy for which the Office Politician lay down their political plans.Promotions are given by manipulating the performance according to desire of the powerful managers. Every manager has a desire to please those juniors who actively support him or help him in his politics. Promotions are driven by the desire to satisfy the promoter?s own ego, desire to favour his own supporters and the desire to punish those who dare to oppose him. Most of the times active/ apparent supporters are promoted even though they may not have the technical capabilities and the oppositions are punished by denying the promotion turn.Hierarchy of Factors effecting the promotions: The below given is a list of factors that effect your promotion in an hierarchical order.1. Relations with superiors: The biggest factor effecting one?s promotions is the relation with superiors. These relations with superior must be up to 2-3 levels ups i.e. with your boss, his boss and his boss if possible.2. Relations with the Peers: Relation with peers also play important role in one?s promotions. Good or neutral feedback from your peers will always enrich your reputation and improve the promotion chance.3. Apparent performance of the person: The next important thing without which it will not be possible to promote a person is his performance. One should always remember that people will make good opinion of you only if your performance figures are good and your boss accepts that your performance figures are good.4. Professional knowledge: Also one must keep updating one?s knowledge, keep learning new things and add degrees and testimonials to one?s bio-data in order to get regular promotions.5. Company policy and availability of the post: Different companies have different written as well as undeclared policies for promoting employees. You should study and be aware of those policies and prepare yourself according to those policies, which may include some training and qualifications.How to become most eligible bachelor for promotion marriage: To become the most eligible bachelor for the promotional marriage, you should try to maintain harmonious relations with your superiors, your peers and try to maintain a high level of performance ? apparent performance (which means your performance should be visible, whether you do it or not).The success of promotion depends on your preparation for promotions. Always keep sensing the new opportunities in your company and get yourself prepared for promotions at all times. At least 2-3 months before promotion are about to be declared, start maintaining good relations with your boss enhance your performance by doing an extra work in your company and try to become a little star for your bosses. Remember the famous army saying - "The more you sweat in peace, the less you bleed in war".What if chances of promotions do not exist in the company: In many companies due to less attrition of the employees, the chances of promotions do not exist. In these companies any amount of politics can not help you out. The best option is to search another job at a higher post or higher pay.
