Sensational! Hilarious! Whether it is the novel or the movie, they are both wonderful entertainers. A must read for students and educators, as well. Matilda, a darling of a girl is a highly gifted child but she lives in a house with self-obsessed parents with no regard for her dreams and aspirations. They are too self-centred to realise and hone the gift this little lady is borne with.
Enter Miss Honey. The kind and considerate teacher, who realises her potential and takes her under her wings. She continuously strives against all odds, including the formidable, Miss Trunchbull. The name says it all, doesn?t it? She is known to catch the children by their hair and volley them out, through the classroom window.
This genius of a girl, Matilda, also possesses this very special power-little waves of lightning seems to flash out of her eyes and then she can move things that she really stares at. It is amazing how this little midget gets even with Miss Trunchbull for all the atrocities she does. Even I clapped with glee when the first miracle takes place. This delightful story goes on to tell how Miss Trunchbull suddenly packs up her bags and leaves. Miss Honey is discovered to be the owner of the big, rambling Red House. The magic she possesses seems to disappear when Matilda is moved to a higher level. Miss Honey reasons that it is so because now she is utilising her mind and intellect judiciously, just the way it should be. So true for most of the kids.
Mr. Wormwood, Matilda?s father is in a hurry to leave the country along with his family as he is in deep trouble. Matilda doesn?t want to go. Miss Honey doesn?t mind keeping her and Matilda?s parents agree to leave her behind as Mrs. Wormwood says there will be one less to look after.
Matilda hugs Hiss Honey and gets hugged back with the same ferocity. They thus embark on a lovely relationship.
