Pride and Prejudice is one of the most popular books written by Jane Austen. This was first published in the year 1813.This is a novel set in the rural England. The plot unfolds with an eligible bachelor, Mr.Bingley coming and to settle down in the neighborhood. Mr. and Mrs. Bennet have five daughters ?Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty and Lydia. The story runs on two interwoven themes, firstly a mother?s wish to see her daughters well settled , secondly the war of egos between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth. Mr. Darcy is the friend of Mr. Bingley who is not ready to mix with the rural society. Elizabeth is shown as a lively and an intelligent girl with a great sense of wit and humor. The pride of Mr. Darcy which makes Elizabeth prejudiced against him is the central plot of the novel. The other characters of the story also contribute to the plot in their own way. Jane the eldest of the Bennet sisters is a pleasant and a charming lady who marries Mr. Bingley. Her other sisters Kitty and Lydia are spirited teenagers .Another sister Mary is fond of books and reads all the time. Simple language and a delightful style, makes the novel very lively. Jane Austen has succeeded in creating the rural atmosphere of a small place where everyone knows each other. A must read.
