The mysterious phone calls enraged Johnny and he angrily stomped out the house one afternoon. When he returned, Tom O?Neil had been carried into an ambulance with Alice nearby. She saw Johnny ? they dare not speak, and the ambulance door closed.
You don?t ever want to play that game, Johnny.
. . . It will destroy you. It will destroy everyone if it?s not stopped. Tom?s words reverberated in his mind as he watched the ambulance drive away.
His hand trembled opening the front door ? seeing a neat business-like letter fall to the floor.
He called Gisela?s name; the house was still. He picked up the letter, walked into the living room and opened it.
Dear Johnny,
I don?t know how to say this, except it?s better if we stay apart. I?m afraid you might get violent. I don?t know who has been calling the house. Tom attempted suicide and you should bare the blame for it! You were supposed to be his friend. . . . and now he might die.
Goodbye, Gisela.
He dropped the letter.

____

A black sedan crossed the Tri-Borough Bridge into the Bronx. Special Agent Mario Caputo and Detective Archie Thomas drove past the dilapidated apartment
buildings on Prospect Boulevard, intensely looking
into the dark alleyways
?Turn, Mario.?
He swerved, ? a day care construction site overshadowed their drive down an alleyway.
?Mon, did you know whose money is building
that day care center?? Archie asked when the car stopped.
Mario looked at the construction site, which read, ?South Bronx Day Care Center Construction Project.?
?Kraemer.? ? Archie?s black face lit up like a candle.
Mario glanced at the construction site, slumped back in his seat, shook his head, and closed his eyes.
___

?There he is.? Archie yelled, a while later. ?Turn the lights on, Mario.?
A well-dressed Latin appeared in the alleyway, carrying a bag. ?I told you. Let?s go, mon,? he pushed open the door and reached for his gun.
?Alto,? Caputo yelled.
Espinoza ran behind the apartment building.
?I?ll get him from the other street.?
?No, follow me.?
A six-foot rear wall was nearly behind Espinoza when they arrived.
?Stop, mon ? stop.?
BANG.
Espinoza fell onto a yard drain.
?Damn.?
?Shah, mon? ? Archie pointed to an apartment house window.
A light in the window made Mario squint.
?Mon, call the station, get some people here. I?m going inside.?
The light went off.
?What? ya mean, I?m goin ??
?I?m the boss, mon,? he whispered, ?what?s in it,? ? and pointed to Espinoza?s bag lying on the ground.
Archie went down a dark corridor, kicked open the door from where the light had emanated and shouted, ?Freeze.? . . . He gaped, and then lowered the gun.
?Holy cow,? Mario said, following him inside. ?What?s that smell, Archie??
They looked at each other.
?Where are your brothers, kids??
?They?re out in space, mon, don?t bother.?
?Archie, look.?
He bent down and opened Espinoza?s black bag.
?About $250,000.?
Two uniform policemen entered and handcuffed the boys.
?That?s chicken feed for the Espinoza family, Mario.?
?Take them down to Juvenile,? Archie said.
He closed the bag and gave it to Mario.
?Where ya going, Archie??
?Home,? and he walked outside.
?Here, you take this,? Mario said, following him out.
?There?s your ride to the station, Mario,? he pointed at the police car.
?Why?d he really come here, Archie??
He stared at the construction site nearby, turned up his collar, and pointed across the Tri-Borough Bridge toward Long Island.
?Must be very cold in Montauk, mon.?
______

?Hello, Gisela,? Johnny said anxiously, after picking up the phone.
?Ha, ha, ha.?
Seagulls landed on the porch outside.
?It?s me, mon.?
?Oh.?
?Aren?t you glad to hear from me??
?No.?
The birds started squealing.
?Johnny??
?Raul Espinoza is dead.?

. . .

?Mon, I can?t hear you.?
?Hey.?
?Kraemer?s your partner, I hear.?
?Get the fu ??
?? He?s a big man.?
?Not as big as you.?
?Really, really Johnny ? my lady never let me have more than ten dollar my pocket.?
?Get out of here.?
?Ha, ha, ha.?
He yanked the phone-line out the socket and walked to the window. The birds were staring at him ?
?What are you looking at??
The phone rang again ? he turned, frowned, went back inside and re-plugged the phone. ?Mr. Thomas, I have nothing else to say to you,? he said. . . . ?Who?s there? . . . What do you want??
Sounds crackled out from the receiver. He slammed it. It rang again. He slowly picked it up, sweat beads trickled down his face.
The birds flew away.
?Hello-hello-hello. . . .Gisela. . . .Thomas,
Giselaaaaaa.?
He stared into the receiver.
