A short time later Johnny rushed home, through the living room and went upstairs to the bedroom.
?Daddy, daddy,? Chris called out from downstairs.
?I?m so sorry. I don?t know what got into me,? he said, and pushed against the bedroom door. . . . ?I?m not the Mafia. Who do you think has been representing the Mafia for the past twenty years??
A door slammed inside. He rushed downstairs past Chris, the babysitter, and out the door. When he arrived back at the O?Neil house, Alice stood in the doorway.
?Have him stay away from my wife, you
understand,? he ranted.
Tom groaned from the bathroom, and Alice cried.
?You knew damn well what was going on, Alice.?
She violently shook her head. He stumbled down the last stair and started back.
?Is that all you got to say??
He spun around. ?No, you?re a kook.?
?You?ll be where I am someday.?
The door slammed. He stared at it, and then walked off toward his house.
A dog barked. He turned. The patio door was open.
?Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr,? the dog was racing toward him.
He grabbed a tree branch.
?Grrr?
?My hand. Damn you dog, get off me.?
?GRRRRRRRR?
He lashed at the dog knocking him away. He stared at the O?Neil house; it was dark. Rain fell and the dog was barking as he closed the front door behind himself.
?You?re bleeding,? the baby sitter said.
?Go home before the rain gets worse.?
?But ??
?Where?s Chris??
He rushed her out the door, turned and saw Gisela walking down the stairs, struggling with a bag.
?Daddy, we?re going away,? he said, clutching her skirt.
?Where are you going??
She trembled.
?Gisela,? he said, touching her.
?Don?t!? She pushed him away.
?Gisela.?
The door shut. His palm feebly pressed upon the door.
