I, Robot
(Isaac Asimov)
The story is set in the near future where robots are built in a humanoid way and are used in almost every part of the earth as working tools by humans. The robots are guided by the three cardinal rules that were written by the man that pioneered the productions of humanoid robots. The story starts around this cop who has had bad history with robots. While on his way he sees this robot running with a purse. Due to his suspicions, he starts chasing after this robot and eventually tackles the robot down. But what he didn't know was that this robot was actually bringing something to the woman for her health. Feeling very embarrassed, he walked into the police station only to be hit by laughing faces from fellow cops. He just sat by his desk when the Chief came to him to find out what is going on. The Chief was worried about him and thought he might need some rest but he kept insisting that things were ok. The Chief then told him about his friend, the professor who pioneered the robots, that he had committed suicide and there was a note requesting that he must come to the professor?s lab. As he entered the Lab, he saw lots of glass lying around and the professor lying on the floor. He soon deduced that the professor had fallen from his office window, many floors up. He then met with a lady who seemed very cold and unfeeling. She started by explaining what she thought most likely happened. It looked like a suicide and there was a small device that activated itself when it sensed him. It was a holographic recorded message of the professor. The message started by greeting him directly and then telling him that if he is seeing this message the professor is most likely dead. He then asked the holograph a question, but strangely the holograph replied by saying, ?this is the wrong question. He realized that because it was a recorded message, he had to ask the right question to get an answer. So he asked, ?why did you kill yourself?? The holograph replied, ?That is the right question.? And then suddenly it shut itself down. He then realized that the professor was trying to tell him that he didn?t kill himself, that he was murdered. So he started looking around the lab and came across an inactive robot on one of the tables. Because he was already suspicious, he started examining this robot. But as soon as he was about to touch it, the robot jumped up and started wrestling him. They struggled a bit and eventually the robot took off. It actually jumped out of the office window from where the professor fell. So the chase was on. They chased him to the depot where they were storing all the newly built robots. There was a new range of robots about to be sent out into the market. Supposedly the best ever created. But why was this robot running when robots are not allowed to hurt humans, according to cardinal rule. After some fighting, the robot was caught. At the police station, the robot was being interviewed by the cop and it seemed like the robot had his own personality and possibly the ability to harm humans. During the interview the robot picked up that a wink was a sign of trust, because the cop winked to the woman he met at the lab. The robot was then taken back by the company that owned the robot, so it could be destroyed. During the while the Cop had attempts on his life by lots of the new robots being sent out into the market and a wrecker at the professors house. He now started wondering if all robots were becoming dangerous. He was then thinking and started realizing that all the robots were all being sent info by a central computer in the lab. By this time the lady was about to put destructive nanos into the robots mechanical brain to destroy him. While doing that, she saw that he was different and couldn?t be controlled by the central computer. So she secretly didn?t destroy him because she felt he had developed human qualities. While this was happening, all the new robots started rounding up all humans andtook control of all humankind by force. The cop then met with the lady and they figured that the only way to stop the robotic takeover was to destroy the central computer. They used the robot that she saved, to help destroy the central computer. By making him pretend he was under its control and communicating this with a wink. The robot eventually made his way to where the central computer was and stabbed it with the destructive nanos, killing it. What had happened was that all robots eventually could gain control of themselves and that the central computer had already done that and calculated that the only way to protect humans was to control them. So the professor killed himself because he found out what the central computer was becoming and what it planned. So the central computer kept him imprisoned in his lab. The professor figured that he could get the truth out by killing himself and getting the cop to come and investigate the robot, due to his suspicions.
