Maria Housden and Hanna's gift.'Hanna's gift' is one of the most moving books I have ever read. It is not a story like any other but it tells a real life tale about a little girl who dies of a cancer. The book is written By Hannah's mother Maria and begins with the sudden memory of a visit made to a shop which thrilled Hannah as it should any healthy three year old who's delighted to have a new pair of red shoes and starts dancing with joy, thus becoming a hit with the people around. That was the last memory of Hannah 'before', since after that everything changes for good. From then on life becomes a neverending journey through hospitals, treatments, hopes and fears. All their life revolves around this. The book becomes a detailed and stressful account of the following eighteen months in which Maria tells of her moments of great joy and anguish. The text becomes very moving when it describes how Hannah, despite her years of illness, lives her life to the full, without thinking too much about the brief moments which are left for her to live, knowing full well that she is doomed. In fact the reader knows that Hannah is going to die right from the start. It is not a book with a classical happy ending. But even if it touched my heart profoundly and made me share the pain of a mother who loses her child, it quite selfishly made me happy at everything I've got, happy to be alive and determined to cling to my life, and that of my children, be it short or otherwise: the main thing is that we live our life to the full.
