(Shama Futehally)

Publicidade
Shama Futehally (1952-2004), won much critical acclaim for her very first novel, the most renowned ?Tara Lane?. Her novel ?Reaching Bombay Central? is yet another piece of eminent heart-warming novel woven in poetic prose. In this elegant novel the author writes about the dilemma and frustrations of a family life focusing on the realities of contemporary India.
The story focuses around Ayesha Jamal and her family, about the issues that rummaged them after her husband was served a suspension order from his job. Mr.Jamal was accused of corruption which he was actually forced to do at the request of NavinBhai his (Hindu) friend in favour of a third (Muslim) person. The Enquiry was carried out and the in-charge, who could easily belittle or magnify the problem, for safeguarding his political interest, played a bitter game against Jamal. Jamal being a minority candidate was lured to enable the sure win of "The Sangha" in the upcoming elections.
The deep torment caused under such a situation which takes a toll on their family life is lucidly portrayed in the novel. The story unveils in a train journey where Ayesha leaves to Bombay to find out a solution to the issue with the help of an influential relative Zahid Mamoo to save her husband. The novel progresses with some comic as well as touching moments. It reveals the strange un-acceptance and awkwardness of a being a Muslim in the present society which the author tries to reveal sharing the incident where there were strained reactions among the election queues when they hear her Muslim name.
In the space of the few hours, the journey takes to Bombay Central, the author creates the four characters, the passengers in the compartment which add more life throughout the novel. There are several instances in between the journey itself (allotting a preferred birth for example) which highlights the improbity both intentional and otherwise in the society. As the train speeds towards the destination, Ayesha's mind is vanquished with the unpleasant thoughts of her husband?s fate in his professional life. Her pathetic state unable to share her melancholy though she wanted to; is evidently manifested in the novel.
Division and harmony being a significant theme of the book, the train journey adds a symbolic touch with the characters or compartment mates. Wrapping-up the entire scenario the warmth conveyed is the wish that the society, though indulged in tearing the world apart would finally settle with determination that they despised it; as Ayesha comes to know on reaching Bombay Central that ?The Sangha? was defeated!
