Guilty Pleasures
(Laurell K. Hamilton)

Publicidade
Guilty Pleasures is action/fantasy noir, written in the first person. Vampires, weres, and other supernaturals have come out of the closet in modern times to receive recognition as U.S. citizens with all associated rights, privileges, and legal obligations. These night-time types are powerful and very dangerous, but most just want to integrate peacefully into human society in spite of wide-spread and often violent discrimination from humans who believe such beings are demonic and therefore inherently evil.

This perspective is occasionally not far from the truth, giving rise to a new breed of bounty hunter licensed by the state to track down and kill rogue supernaturals by any means necessary. Baddest of these Vampire Hunters is Anita Blake, a petite, dark haired young woman in her early twenties who looks completely harmless but who is in reality the coldest, deadliest gunslinger ever to sashay on heels. As the number of her supernatural kills rises, so does Anita?s reputation among the undead. She becomes known as ?The Executioner?.

But hunting supernatural critters is just a sideline. Her full time employment is with an agency which contractually raises the dead. Anita is an animator or ?zombie raiser?, a job which requires some magical talent but relies mainly on ritual and some minor blood sacrifice. Anita is one of the best animators, surprisingly so, since she has had little training in ritualistic voodoo magic. But she has something else: a disturbing, innate affinity for the dead, a growing necromantic power which cannot have human origins.

One night a vampire comes into Anita's office with a surprising request from the Master Vampire of the city. It seems that several vampires have been killed without official sanction and the Master wants the Executioner herself to find the murderer. Over 1,000 years old, the Master is an awesome power against whom Anita cannot hope to stand. Nevertheless, Anita doesn't work for vampires and so, with characteristic courage, she refuses - but the Master of the City is not easily dissuaded.

Anita Blake is not a typical action heroine firing nonstop at cardboard targets. Her life is real, the bad guys are deeply scary, and Anita herself is a complex, conflicted individual stubbornly unwilling to back down or even step aside in the face of terrifying supernatural threats.

If you like action blended with fantasy in noir style, you?ll love Guilty Pleasures.
